THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL	The National University Hospital is at the forefront of specialized and general health care in Iceland.  Here is the centre for knowledge and know-how, providing the basis for the nation's  health service and the education of its professionals, as the hospital is instrumental in basic and further training of the health care community. The hospital leads the field of health sciences with diverse laboratory work and health instruction.

	The National University Hospital is administered by the Ministry of Health and Social Security. It receives appropriations in the general budget. In 1996, the appropriations amounted to 7 billion IKR or 22% of the total health sector appropriations and 6% of the total expenditure of the Icelandic State. State appropriations amount to 91% of the total running cost of the hospital. Special income for services rendered to other medical care establishments and services provided in outpatients wards, X-rays and other laboratory work, which are paid in part by the patient, amount to 9% of the total running cost.
