SCIENTIFIC WORK       Active scientific work is the best guarantee for progress and the basis of good education of health staff and thereby the care of the sick. In the wards of the hospital, continuous research is being done on the causes and nature of diseases. The small Icelandic population provides a unique opportunity to trace the process of diseases and whether they are hereditary. This applies for example to research on cerebral haemorrhage in Icelandic families and breast cancer among Icelandic women. Scientists at the hospital have a renowned international reputation and their work has been introduced widely. To name an example, every year dozens of articles on their work are published in recognized foreign scientific journals.

Research is continually underway aiming to improve the care of the sick and ensure efficient running of the service provided at the National University Hospital. The aim is to guarantee that within the hospital the best available health service is provided at each time. By using the latest technology, although with due account of the past, the staff has the ambition, ability and resolution to improve and progress in the name of humanity and science.
